Existing Buildings

Building owners and/or their designated property managers are legally responsible for ensuring that buildings and tenant spaces comply with all applicable codes adopted by the State of Georgia and the City of Sandy Springs.

Requirements include maintaining visible and properly serviced fire extinguishers, keeping fire lanes clear, and ensuring exit signs and emergency lighting remain operational.

Fire safety systems such as sprinklers, fire alarms, private fire hydrants, standpipes, fire pumps, generators, and kitchen hood suppression systems must also be tested at frequencies required by code.

Documentation of all required inspections and testing must be maintained on site and made available to fire code officials upon request.

Fire Safety Inspections

Fire inspections are conducted to identify and reduce potential fire and life safety hazards in buildings. A written report outlining any required corrections will be provided to the property owner.

Fire Extinguisher Requirements

Georgia law requires fire extinguishers to be installed in all occupancies and serviced by a State-certified contractor. Fire extinguishers must be re-certified every 12 months.

Note: The Multi-Family Housing (Sec. 105) and Fire Safety (Sec. 22) Ordinances have changed.
