Utility Work
Utility companies frequently perform work within Sandy Springs neighborhoods to install or maintain cable, gas, electric, and other utility infrastructure. All utility work must be performed in accordance with City Utility Permit Policies (PDF).
Most utility work occurs within the public right-of-way, which is land reserved for the maintenance or expansion of public infrastructure. In residential areas, this space is typically located approximately 10 feet behind the curb.
Before beginning work in a neighborhood, a utility company must:
- Obtain a permit from the City of Sandy Springs.
- Provide a Notice of Utility Work flyer to each impacted residence.
- Post a Notice of Utility Work sign when a project includes more than 500 feet of underground work.
- Include the utility company's name and contact information, as well as contact information for any subcontractors working on the project.
Reporting a Problem
Your first step in resolving an issue related to utility work should be to contact the utility company directly. As part of the City's notification requirements, utility companies must post contact information at the project site.
You can also identify active utility projects using the Utility Permit Map. Instructions for using the map are provided below.
Note: For urgent issues, such as a power outage, contact the utility company and the City at 770-730-5600. For public safety emergencies, such as a gas leak, call 9-1-1 immediately.
Who Is Working Where?
The City maintains a Utility Permit Map that shows where utility companies are working throughout the city.
Using the Utility Permit Map
Colored lines on the Utility Permit Map indicate areas where utility work is underway or planned. To find activity near a specific address, enter the address in the "Find address or place" search field, including "Sandy Springs, GA," and press Enter.
Select the Legend button in the upper-left corner of the map to display a color-coded legend on the right side of the screen.
Select a colored project segment to view details about that project. In the example below, selecting the orange segment displays information about an AT&T fiber installation project, including the permit number and project dates. Selecting the Permit Details link opens permit information on the Build Sandy Springs portal.
