Solstice

Artist: David Landis

Solstice sculpture by artist David Landis displayed outdoors at City Springs.
Solstice sculpture by David Landis.

Solstice was a finalist in the City's third annual Arts in the Open sculpture contest. In 2022, the Cornerstone Donors purchased the sculpture and gifted it to the City in honor of the Sandy Springs Society's 35 years of service to the community.

Artist Statement

My sculpture SOLSTICE was inspired by the grace and beauty of a single floret of a hydrangea bloom, where the individual petals roll and bend in harmony with subtle and alluring curves — the perfect muse for a sculptor.

I enjoy taking subjects out of their normal context and presenting them in an unexpected format while still honoring the original inspiration. In this sculpture, I positioned the floret upright on one petal rather than using the expected stem for support and enlarged the design from its original one-inch size to a monumental scale.

Standing upright on its base, the sculpture takes on a majestic presence. The polished stainless steel reflects the surrounding environment and viewer, creating a visual connection between the artwork, the space, and the community.

Having grown up in Sandy Springs and spent formative years riding my bike through the parking lot that is now the heart of City Springs, it is especially meaningful to have SOLSTICE permanently installed near City Springs.

The friendships and experiences formed there continue to shape who I am today. I remain deeply grateful to the City, ART Sandy Springs, and the many supporters who helped make this installation possible.
