Sandy Springs Gears Up to Celebrate 20 Years of Incorporation
July 8, 2025
On December 1, the City of Sandy Springs will celebrate its 20th anniversary of cityhood. This milestone marks a significant achievement for a community that fought for nearly 40 years to establish its own government apart from Fulton County. Following a resounding 94% vote in favor of incorporation on June 21, 2005, Sandy Springs became the first new city in Georgia in nearly 50 years, paving the way for dozens of cities to follow in its quest for self-government.
The same tenacity and resident pride that enabled Sandy Springs’ pioneering system of government still exists in the city today through volunteer organizations and citizen engagement. To mark this anniversary, the City and various community groups have partnered to produce events and ways to celebrate together with residents.
- Limited-Edition Logo: The City has released a limited-edition logo to commemorate the occasion. Residents will be able to purchase items with the logo to show their community pride. Stickers, magnets and mugs will be available for sale throughout the year at CityBar & Café and at various Signature Events.
- Turtle Walk on City Green, June-September: Creatively painted turtles are a staple of Sandy Springs, serving as a means of fundraising in early efforts to incorporate and now proudly displayed at various locations around the City for the community to enjoy. In celebration of the 20th anniversary, Art Sandy Springs and the Sandy Springs Society have partnered to bring several town turtles to City Green from June to September.
- In addition to the sculptures outside, a collection of children’s artwork will be displayed in the Gallery at City Springs depicting their vision of what Sandy Springs will look like in the next 20 years. A delightful exhibit bridging the past, present and future, these exhibitions will be highlighted during a gallery reception open to the public on Thursday, July 10 from 6-8 p.m.
- 20 Years Strong | 20 Ways to Connect, June-December: The Sandy Springs Civic Roundtable’s strong network for non-profits and civic entities have provided essential resources for our community over the last 38 years. Springboard Sandy Springs, an initiative of the Sandy Springs Civic Roundtable, helps connect residents' and businesses' Passion with a Purpose. To celebrate Sandy Springs’ 20th Anniversary, the organization has announced 20 Years Strong | 20 Ways to Connect. Now through the end of the year, they invite the community to participate in volunteer opportunities and programs, and a Family Fun Day event on September 20, which help make Sandy Springs a vibrant place to live. - Special Archive Exhibit, Mid-July-December: Discover the story of the City of Sandy Springs’ journey to self-governance at the opening of a special exhibit in City Hall. The display will feature a unique collection of artifacts, documents, and memorabilia honoring the decades-long effort of residents to gain local control. At the heart of the exhibit is Sandy Springs founding Mayor Eva Galambos, whose leadership ultimately lead to the City’s incorporation. From grassroots movements to historic milestones, each piece reflects the spirit of activism, determination, resilience, and civic pride that built the community.
