Safety Tips for the Holiday Season

December 6, 2021

Holiday safety tips from the Sandy Springs Police Department:

According to the SSPD, the number one issue during the holidays are “porch pirates.” These criminals steal packages that are left outside the different delivery service. To better protect residents from this, Amazon for example provides a service where your Amazon purchased items can be safely secured in an Amazon locker. These lockers are located in different spots throughout the city, here's a link to locate Amazon lockers. Another typical holiday crime are “entering-autos.” This is when a criminal sees something of value in plain view inside a vehicle. They typically break the window and steal the contents. SSPD urges residents to not leave anything of value in plain view and hide their items in the truck instead, and be as discreet as you can.

Holiday safety tips from the Sandy Springs Fire Department:

The National Fire Protection Association reports that more than one-third of home decoration fires are started by candles, keep lit candles away from decorations and other items that can burn. Keep an eye on children and pets when they're around lit candles. When choosing decorations, select decorations that are flame resistant or retardant. Use clips instead of nails to hang lights so the cords don't get damaged. For Christmas tree safety, choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall of when touched.Place the tree at least three feet away from any heat source, lide fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. Never use lit candles to decorate trees. Always turn off lights and extinguish candles before leaving home or going to bed. More tips from SSFD.
