City of Sandy Springs to Cut Ribbon and Host Open House for Abernathy Arts Center Expansion

April 7, 2026

The City of Sandy Springs will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Abernathy Arts Center expansion. The investment of the new Arts Center reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to increasing arts programming and enhancing cultural spaces for the community.

WHEN: Tuesday, April 28 at 11:30 a.m.

WHERE: Abernathy Arts Center (254 Johnson Ferry Rd.)

DETAILS: The new modular structure has transformed the site into a vibrant, creative space featuring two classrooms, a ceramic art studio, and kiln house. Exterior improvements include a new wrap-around deck, refreshed building façade, enhanced sidewalk access, and landscaping designed to complement the surrounding campus. The event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a tour of the facilities.

BACKGROUND: In 2021, the Sandy Springs Public Facilities Authority accepted the transfer of the property from Fulton County. The City then partnered with the non-profit organization Art Sandy Springs (ArtSS) to provide arts programming for children through adults.

Due to structural deficiencies and accessibility inadequacies, the former stone arts building required significant repairs and was deemed unsafe and unstable. Demolition of the building began in the fall of 2024.
