2022 Lantern Parade-Take it to the River

Saturday, April 30

Get your lantern ready for the Sandy Springs 2022 Take it to the River Lantern Parade.

Follow the giant lantern puppets and everyone’s favorite marching band, the Black Sheep Ensemble, down to beautiful Morgan Falls Overlook Park and see the water lantern puppets come to life on the Chattahoochee River.  NEW this year, Hardy the purple hippo and his best friend Laurel, the egret, who rides on his back!  Dancing with twelve-foot tall great blue heron puppets while watching a twenty-six foot long albino alligator swim in the river is an experience unique in the world. All of the giant lantern puppets are created by lantern parade artist, Chantelle Rytter and performed by Krewe of the Grateful Gluttons and High County Outfitters paddle pros.

Pre-parade activities in the Steel Canyon Golf Club parking lot (460 Morgan Falls Road) will run from 6 – 8 p.m. and will feature food, entertainment, and children’s activities. The parade will step off at 8:15 p.m. to make its way down to Morgan Falls Overlook Park where participants will be able to catch a glimpse of some spectacular floating lanterns on the river!

MAKE A LANTERN!

You make the magic! Pick up a lantern kit (see below for locations), download a free lantern template, or make your own.  Let your imagination run wild.  There are lots of easy lantern-making ideas and free downloadable lantern prints at Chantelle’s Lantern Ideas & Inspiration page!  Only LED battery powered lights allowed.  No fire and no flying lanterns.  Shine your light and take it to the river!

Get a Lantern Kit! On April 2, a variety of lantern kits will be available at Sandy Springs Ace Hardware, 6348 Roswell Rd, Sandy Springs, GA 30328, and Steel Canyon Golf Club, 460 Morgan Falls Rd, Sandy Springs, GA 30350.

At the Sandy Springs Farmer’s Market on April 9 and 16, you can pick up a lantern kit, get some pointers from Chantelle, stay and make an easy lantern, and meet one of the giant puppets! Flying pig lantern kits will be available at all the locations. The Sandy Springs Swoop of Flying Pigs lead the parade!
