The Sandy Springs Fire Department (SSFD) is a high-performing organization serving more than 100,000 residents across a 38-square-mile service area in the north metropolitan Atlanta region.

The department currently employs 102 full-time field personnel operating from five fire stations equipped with modern apparatus and equipment.

Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or GED certificate
- United States citizenship
- Minimum age of 18
- Honorable discharge for military veterans
- Valid U.S. driver’s license
- NPQ or IFSAC Firefighter I certification
Recruitment and Hiring Process
Steps in the hiring process include:
- Complete an online application
- Successfully complete the Physical Agility Test (PAT). Details are provided prior to the assigned test date.
- Participate in an interview with the SSFD Recruitment Team to assess organizational fit and discuss qualifications.
- Complete a background check, including criminal history and driving record review
- Receive a preliminary offer letter. Eligible applicants are placed on an active eligibility list for up to 12 months while vacancies are filled.
- Complete a medical evaluation
- Complete a polygraph examination
- Complete a psychological evaluation
- Interview with the Fire Chief
The hiring process requires successful completion of each step and is designed to identify qualified firefighter candidates for the City of Sandy Springs.
Prior to the Fire Chief interview, applicants are fitted for uniforms and firefighting gear.
Newly hired firefighters are assigned either to recruit school or directly to an active crew, depending on prior experience.
Pay and Benefits
Starting firefighter salaries in SSFD remain competitive within the metro Atlanta area.
- FF1/EMT — $53,636
- FF1/PMDC — $58,936
- FF2/EMT — $63,070
- FF2/PMDC — $67,405
- Annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) and performance bonus eligibility
- Additional annual compensation opportunities for participation in specialty teams, including TEMS, TRT Squad, Bike Medics, Honor Guard, Fire and EMS Instructors, and Arson Investigators
- 148 to 160 hours of overtime built into the annual work schedule

Retirement Benefits
- Full-time City employees receive a 12% contribution from the City into a 401(a) retirement account beginning the first month after 90 days of employment.
- Employees may also contribute up to the IRS maximum into a 457(b) account, with the City matching up to the first 5% of contributions into the employee’s 401(a), for a maximum possible City contribution of 17%.
