Fire Corps (SSFC)
The Sandy Springs Fire Corps (SSFC) is the volunteer unit of the Sandy Springs Fire Department (SSFD) and is an extension of SSFD’s Community Affairs Section. It is staffed by qualified residents of Sandy Springs who have volunteered to serve their community specifically through support of SSFD.
Fire Corps (FC) members are recruited through ongoing outreach efforts and from the ranks of Citizens Fire Academy (CFA) graduates. Members must be Sandy Springs residents, at least 18 years of age, and able to pass a background check.
FC members perform several non-firefighting roles, including:
Respond as Requested by SSFD Command
This includes responding to working incidents, EOC (Emergency Operations Center) and severe weather standbys, and other emergencies or special details.
Firefighter Rehab
Provide rehabilitation support for firefighters during working incidents and training exercises. Fire Corps members are trained to help mitigate the physiological effects of heat and smoke exposure, physical exertion, and severe weather conditions.
Basic Life Support (BLS) Backup
Provide BLS assistance to firefighters and civilians on scene who have experienced an injury or medical emergency when EMS resources are unavailable or otherwise occupied. Several FC members are certified Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT).
FC EMR/EMT Response
To extend the capabilities of SSFD, FC EMRs and EMTs respond to emergency medical calls alongside Firefighter Paramedic and EMT crews to assist with patient care and gain valuable field experience.
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Services
Maintain and transport reserve air cylinders used in firefighter SCBAs during working incidents and training exercises. Fire Corps members exchange full air cylinders for used cylinders on scene, decontaminate and refill used cylinders, and replenish the reserve supply.
Support SSFD Training
Provide support as requested by the SSFD Training Section during firefighter training exercises. This support typically includes firefighter rehabilitation and SCBA services.
Fire Marshal Support
Assist SSFD Fire Marshals with fire and life safety inspections, fire drills at high-occupancy buildings, delivery of written notices, and other projects.
Support Civilian Fire Drills
Assist SSFD Community Affairs and Fire Marshals with fire drills at high-occupancy buildings throughout the city. Duties may include observing evacuation traffic in stairwells, noting unsafe practices, and conducting floor sweeps to verify evacuation after Floor Wardens have cleared the floors.
Instruct CPR/AED Classes
Assist SSFD Community Affairs in providing CPR and AED training for residents, businesses, schools, and community groups throughout the city.
Support Community Events
Provide support at community events throughout the year, including City Green Concerts, the Lantern Parade, the Sandy Springs Festival, and other events as requested by SSFD Community Affairs. Support may include EMR/EMT presence and event safety services.
Support the Citizens Fire Academy (CFA)
Assist SSFD with Citizens Fire Academy classes and training sessions as requested.
Fire Corps Vehicles
The FC primarily operates from SSFD’s Special Operations truck for firefighter rehabilitation and SCBA services. Backup and support vehicles include a Chevrolet pickup truck with a camper shell and a Ford Explorer.
SSFC Training
Members are offered training throughout the year by SSFD and the FC internal Training Section and are expected to participate regularly. Participation in at least 24 training hours annually is required.
