Fence Permits
A Fence Permit is required to:
- Install a new fence or gate
- Replace an existing fence or gate
Fence Permits apply to both residential and commercial properties.
Fence Types and Requirements
- General Residential Fences
Fences used to enclose residential properties. Inspections are required for fences taller than 7 feet. - Masonry Piers
Masonry piers must be reviewed and pass footing inspections. - Vehicular and Electronic Gates
Gates must be reviewed by both the Building Division and the Fire Marshal’s Office. Inspections are required. - Subdivision and Commercial Enclosures
Commercial fences and subdivision complex enclosures must be reviewed by the Building Division and Fire Marshal’s Office. - Commercial Dumpster Enclosures
Dumpster enclosures require submission of a site plan through a Building Permit application. Review typically takes at least 10 business days. Fulton County approval may also be required if a dumpster pad is proposed.
When a Fence Permit Is Not Required
A Fence Permit is not required for:
- Temporary security fencing during construction
- Pool enclosures included as part of an approved Pool Permit application
Who Can Apply for a Fence Permit?
Fence Permits may be obtained by:
- Licensed contractors
- Property owners
- Property owner representatives
Applying for a Fence Permit
Applications can be submitted online through Build Sandy Springs .
The portal allows applicants to:
- Complete applications
- Submit construction drawings
- Pay invoices
- Request inspections
- Track permit status
Applicants may also schedule an appointment through QLess to meet with a Permit Technician at City Hall for assistance.
Application Documents
- A site plan or survey showing the proposed fence location is preferred. If unavailable, contact staff for application assistance.

- Width of piers, if applicable
- Erosion control plans showing BMP locations and standard details
- Tree Conservation Plan including canopy coverage calculations
Permit Fees
The standard Fence Permit fee is $80 and includes:
- $25 administrative fee
- $50 certificate of completion fee
- $5 technology fee
Fence permits that include a vehicular gate require:
- Additional $100 plan review fee
- Additional $5 technology fee
Total permit cost with a vehicular gate: $185
