Welcome to our gallery without walls!
The City Springs complex reinforces the community’s dedication to the arts. Designed as a gathering place for residents and visitors, City Springs features the 1,070- seat Byers Theatre, Studio Theatre, and outdoor performance area as part of the City Green, featuring a variety of musical and cultural events attracting local and regional audiences.
The City of Sandy Springs, in partnership with Art Sandy Springs, launched its inaugural ArtSS in the Open public outdoor sculpture competition at City Springs in 2018. The Call invited local, regional, and national artists to make submissions for possible inclusion in an outdoor exhibit surrounding the City Green and City Springs. The first sculpture garden was installed in summer 2019.
“A desire to bring the arts closer to home inspired the formation of City Springs, and it has quickly developed into a creative commons where community theatre to nationally-known artists perform. It is exciting to bring the additional element of visual art to the stage with this rotating exhibition, also adding to a civic art collection throughout our city,” said Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul.
The theme for the inaugural competition is “Inspired. By nature.” Nine sculptures are prominently displayed around the City Green for the first annual exhibit. The City will purchase one or more sculptures from each annual competition to add to its growing public art collection. Sculptures purchased will be placed in permanent public locations around the city.
The public sculpture competition was created to bring art to the parks and public spaces throughout the city of Sandy Springs, as well as enhance the 14-acre City Springs campus, which opened in August 2018. City Springs is home to City Hall, a Performing Arts Center featuring a 1,070-seat performance theatre, as well as a Studio Theatre, a Conference Center, residential, retail, and a four-acre programmed City Green.
All submissions to the ArtSS in the Open competition should be made electronically through CaFE.org via their submission portal (http://www.callforentry.org). Artists with inquiries can ask for information at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Art Sandy Springs is a 501c-3 formed in 2007, to bring art to the public realm of the city. ArtSS has procured four major sculptures currently on display at the library, partnered with Sandy Springs Conservancy to create The Playable Art Park at Abernathy Greenway, and teamed with the Atlanta Hawks on a mural at the Morgan Falls athletic fields. In 2017, ArtSS formed a partnership with the City of Sandy Springs to manage an ongoing annual juried sculpture competition for a collection to be on permanent display throughout the parks and public spaces of the city.
