Sandy Springs has two kinds of fire hydrants which provide a water supply in case of a large fire.  Public hydrants are the most common. These are located on the right-of-way, adjacent to public streets and roads. These fire hydrants are painted silver and belong to the Atlanta Water Department. Sandy Springs coordinates with the City of Atlanta Watershed for hydrant maintenance.

The second kind of hydrant is a private hydrant. These hydrants are located inside of complexes such as business parks, schools, apartments, etc. These hydrants are owned by the property owner whose responsibility it is to maintain them through an annual inspection from a city-approved contractor. Private fire hydrants are both silver and some are painted red. The Fire Marshal’s Office is gradually phasing out the red colored ones and having them painted silver for standardization. The silver private hydrants are differentiated from public hydrants by a reflective orange band on the hydrant bonnet.

If anyone observes a fire hydrant that appears damaged or is leaking water contact, please call our 24/7 Call Center at 770.730.5600

For all fire hydrants that are not located in a public right of way, the property owner is responsible for the testing and maintenance of the fire hydrant which must be completed by qualified subcontractors. The inspection reports will subject to review by the Fire Department.

The City conducts annual inspections and flushing of all fire hydrants within the city to ensure proper maintenance of the fire hydrants. Hydrant flushing helps ensure water quality and works to prevent buildup of minerals and sediments within the water lines, which can cause rusting.  During the flushing process, water at the hydrant site, as well as in nearby homes, may temporarily appear rust-colored as iron and mineral deposits in the water are stirred up.  The water is safe to use and consume during hydrant flushing, but could stain laundry.  To clear home lines, residents should run the cold water tap until the water runs clear. Watch for notices on the City website or social media for testing periods.
