When is the permit required?

A pool permit is required for new pool installations and repairs to existing pools and pool decking.

When is the permit NOT required?

A pool permit is not required for above ground pool placements.

Who can apply for a permit?

A permit can be obtained by licensed contractor or the property owner. In order for the property owner to obtain a permit, the property must be their current permanent residence.

Applying for a Pool Permit

To apply for a pool permit, please visit the construction permit desk located at the “Zoning and Permitting” entrance on the south side of City Hall. Pool permit plan reviews are generally conducted within 5 to 10 business days.

Licensed Contractors: Please bring your Business License and state issued ID (e.g. driver’s license).

Property Owners: Please bring your state issued ID (e.g. driver’s license). You will need to sign an affidavit certifying that you are responsible for the project.

Pool Installation Plan Checklist 

The following documents are required in order to obtain a Pool Permit:

  1. Completed Pool Permit Application.
  2. A site plan showing the location of the pool consisting of either:
    a. Pool Installation Plan, or,
    b. Single Family Site Plan (SFSP) in lieu of the Pool Installation Plan.
  3. City of Atlanta Water Approval (or evidence of existing backflow preventer).
  4. fence permit. All swimming pools require a fence for safety purposes.
  5. Soil Erosion Agreement

The following documents are required under certain circumstances:

  1. If a septic system or well is on the same site, approval from the Fulton County Health Department is required.
  2. If the pool is a commercial installations, stamped plans from the Fulton County Health Department are required.

Permit Fees

Inspection Process

To complete your permit requirements, you will need to schedule phased inspections using the online inspection request form. Alternatively you can call 770-730-5600.

1. Pre-Construction Meeting and Site Inspection: The pre-construction meeting and site inspection is conducted prior to any and all land disturbing activities.

2 Final Inspection: The final inspection is conducted when the project is completed.
