Ponce de Leon Park, Atlanta’s first home for baseball

History group remembers Ponce de Leon Park, Atlanta’s first home for baseball.

Atlanta's baseball history is filled with big moments and famous players. Some can remember when the Braves won the World Series in 1995. Or when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's all-time home run record in 1974. But memories of baseball before 1966, when the Braves came to Atlanta, have begun to fade.

The Atlanta chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) is bringing Atlanta's forgotten baseball history back to life. On January 25 at the Sandy Springs Library, the chapter is hosting a celebration of Ponce de Leon Park, Atlanta's home for baseball for more than fifty years---from 1907 to 1964. Ponce de Leon Park was located in Atlanta across the street from today's Ponce City Market. On these grounds the Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Association won more championships than any other minor league baseball franchise in history. The park was also, at times, home to the Atlanta Black Crackers, a member of the famed Negro Leagues.

The featured speaker of the day is Paul Crater of the Atlanta History Center. Mr. Crater will explore the visual history of Ponce de Leon Park utilizing the vast archives of the AHC. His presentation will include rare photos and film clips of the field and players, as well as the story of the park's origins and important milestones.

Other presentations will focus on remembering some of the top players to ever play at Ponce de Leon Park, and a special presentation on the landmark series of games held at the ballpark in April 1949 when the Crackers faced off against Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Both students of baseball history and Atlanta history will enjoy these presentations. The event takes place on Saturday, January 25, 2020, 2pm to 4:30pm, at the Sandy Springs Library, Meeting Room C, 395 Mount Vernon Hwy. NE, Atlanta, GA 30328. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited.
