Steve's Live Music Presents Joe Alterman Trio with guest Karla Harris

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Joe Alterman studied music at New York University, where he received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Jazz Piano Performance. In addition to performances with Houston Person, Les McCann and his own trio, among others, Alterman has performed at many world renowned venues including the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Birdland and New York’s Blue Note, where Alterman has opened, many times, for Ramsey Lewis. Thirty years old, Alterman has released four critically-acclaimed albums, his most recent being 2018’s “More Cornbread”. He was profiled three times by iconic journalist Nat Hentoff and was the subject of Hentoff’s very last piece on music in March 2016. Dick Cavett has referred to Alterman as “one fine, first class entertainer” and Ramsey Lewis has called Alterman “an inspiration to me” and his piano playing “a joy to behold”. "Joe is, for me, absolutely one of the most musically enjoyable, swingingest Jazz pianists who can be heard playing today. Joe's music sings with tremendous, unpretentious joy in every brilliant note - he is not to be missed!" - Benny Green

Karla Harris is known for jazz vocals that bring honeyed nuance, sophisticated warmth and dynamic delivery to the songs she sings. She weaves her influences of jazz, the standards, swing, blues and soul, as well as an affinity for Latin jazz, into a multi-textured musical tapestry, blending boundaries while remaining respectful to the roots of each tune. Her art lies not only in expansive vocals but also in a knack for tapping into the emotion of a song and delivering it fully. Karla’s versions of Brubeck classics, featuring Karla singing lyrics written by Iola Brubeck such as “Take Five,” “Far More Blue,” and “Trav’lin Blues” are heard on jazz radio internationally. A new album released October 2018, “Certain Elements,” introduces Karla as a songwriter. The project, which is charting on prestigious Jazz Week chart, features a suite of original tunes. The album’s first single, a remake of the ’60s hit “Cherish,” is heard on contemporary jazz stations across the globe. Legendary smooth jazz artist Dave Koz featured the song on his SiriusXM radio show, The Dave Koz Lounge. O’s Place Jazz writes of the album: “Karla Harris is a jazz vocalist with
exceptional talent that surfaces like a beautiful ballet dancer on Certain Elements.”
