SANDY SPRINGS HOSTS DEDICATION OF NEW ROADWAY IN HONOR OF DR. LEILA DENMARK ON THURSDAY, JUNE 21, 2018

  • Date: 06/21/2018 11:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
  • Introduction: Ceremony to take place at 11:00 a.m. at Denmark Drive and Boylston Drive

The City of Sandy Springs will host a dedication ceremony to officially name a new roadway after Dr. Leila Denmark.  Joining Mayor and Council to unveil the new street sign will be Mary Hutcherson, the daughter of Dr. Denmark, and members of her family.

Dr. Denmark attended the Medical College of Georgia, the University’s third woman student and the only female student in her class.  She is recognized as the first resident doctor at Henrietta Egleston Hospital for Children, and she operated in private practice from offices in Sandy Springs, Atlanta, and rural Forsyth County.  Dr. Denmark practiced until 2001, retiring at the age of 103, the world’s oldest practicing pediatrician.

An outbreak of whooping cough in the 1930s in Atlanta prompted Dr. Denmark to begin her study of the disease. Over the next six years, her work was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, and in partnership with Emory University and Eli Lilly & Company, she developed the first pertussis vaccine.

Dr. Denmark provided many patients in Sandy Springs and the metro area with advice and care, and her guidance continues through her books, “Every Child Should Have a Chance,” and “Dr. Denmark Said It: Advice to Mothers from America’s Most Experienced Pediatrician.”

Dr. Denmark passed away in December 2011 at the age of 114 years.

Public Meeting Agendas and Minutes

Prior to meetings of City Council, board and commissions, agendas with supporting documents are posted online. During a City Council meeting, items that are noted as new business, unfinished business, public hearing or a part of a zoning agenda (heard the second Council meeting of the month) will be discussed and available for public comment. If you would like to speak during a Council meeting, please fill out a public comment card and submit it to the City Clerk prior to the meeting start (Comment Cards are available as you enter Council chambers). Make sure to print clearly your name and the agenda item number for the item about which you wish to speak. Work Session, as the name implies, is an opportunity for the City Council to discuss - but not vote - on individual items of business. Work Sessions are typically held at the start of a City Council meeting, prior to the regular session meeting. Executive Sessions are held on an as-needed basis and in following state law, are called to discuss topics including: employee matters, pending litigation, future acquisition of real estate, staff meetings regarding investigative purposes, and tax matters. If any of the topics discussed requires a vote, the Mayor and City Council will call for the vote in a public forum.

Minutes are not issued for the following meetings: Community Developer Resolution, Community Zoning Information

To view agenda documents, you will need PDF software or web-browser plug-in. The Google Chrome web-browser has a PDF viewer built in and is available for download free of charge.
