July 11, 2018 - Lauretta Hannon:
The Cracker Queen
Lauretta Hannon is probably best known as an author and
commentator on NPR’s All Things Considered where she can
reach up to 25.5 million listeners every week. Since 2000,
she has also been known for her Georgia Public Radio
stories, many of which celebrate strong, authentic Southern
women—like her memoir, The Cracker Queen. Hannon’s hilarious memoir
chronicles her “deeply dysfunctional family” and include chain gangs, guns,
ghost hunting, moonshine stands, scooterpootin', the famous Goat Man of
Georgia, and Crazy Aunt Carrie who is arrested for assaulting a police dog. The
early years of hardship and hard living all gave Hannon the resilience and
humor that are now the hallmarks of her Cracker Queen way of life.
