Emergency Services

Combining a dedicated staff with the latest equipment and best practices provides the residents and business owners of Sandy Springs with one of the best fire fighting companies in the country.

Firefighting
The department response rate is among the best in the metro area due to training and a commitment to providing our crews with the best possible equipment and resources.
The City is fortunate that only two percent of all calls for service of the Sandy Springs Fire Department involve active fires.  When fires do occur, our department is ready!  Our personnel log more than 30,000 hours of Fire and EMS training per year.  In 2019, the department unveiled a new fleet of fire trucks including one Tower ladder, two ladder trucks, two engines, and one squad vehicle. The City has strong ties and active automatic aid agreements with the cities of North Fulton and the City of Atlanta as well as a mutual aid agreement with Cobb County and DeKalb County.

SSFD is ready to respond on land and on water – a few interesting facts:

  • Two Aerial Trucks – these truck have 107’ heavy-duty ladders
  • One Aerial Platform Truck – like the Aerial truck with the addition of a platform/bucket at the tip of the ladder
  • One Squad – handles technical rescue calls and also runs as an engine
  • Four Engines – each hold 500 gallons of water and can pump at a rate of 2,000 gallons per minute
  • One Mini-pumper - (1500 gallon per minute single stage pump) – has a 400 gallon tank featuring a Class A foam system
  • One Battalion Chief – carries equipment needed to manage and command emergency incidents
  • One Rescue Boat – shallow water access boat with a 250 horsepower jet-drive motor
  • One Air Trailer – carries spare SCBA bottles and has a refilling station for use on emergency incidents
  • One Fire Corps Support Unit – to support Community Risk Reduction at civic events
  • One Fire Special Operations Command Unit - provides decon, hydration and rehab facilities for firefighters including bathroom, has compressor and full bottle refilling station, 150' tethered drone, light tower, command area, and equipment to support technical rescue
  • one All Terrain Vehicle with a stretcher and a 200 gallon tank

Rescue / Emergency Medical Services

The Sandy Springs Fire Department prides itself on its ability to provide state-of-the-art first response system for vehicle accidents as well as emergency medical service calls.  Our firefighters use the most current evidence-based recommendations set by the American Heart Association for treating acute myocardial infarctions (heart attacks), sudden cardiac death and stroke care.
All SSFD emergency response vehicles are licensed as first responder units with the state of Georgia.  A SSFD fire unit may respond to your medical calls in addition to an ambulance to assist with medical care.

  • SSFD units are staffed with three or four firefighters with EMS certifications up to the Paramedic level.
  • All SSFD units carry the same medical equipment that an ambulance does, have personnel with the same levels of training, and can provide the same level of interventions.
  • The closest available, and most appropriate units, will be dispatched to your emergency call.
  • Engines, trucks and squad are the only units capable of responding to a fire call.
  • Most minor EMS responses will be handled by an ambulance only.
  • More serious emergencies, calls located on high traffic roadways, or traffic accidents, will receive a SSFD unit to assist with patient care.
  • Additional resources may be requested once the first units arrive on scene.
